Before your child's appointment

A few simple things can help make your child's vaccination appointment run smoothly.

Bring the Blue Book

Please bring your child's Personal Health Record (Blue Book) so we can record their vaccinations and complete any required documentation.

Book around the due date

Vaccinations are generally best given on or after the recommended due date. If you're unsure, speak with our team before booking.

Your appointment is also an opportunity to discuss your child's growth, development or any concerns you may have.

Important: Some vaccines given before the recommended due date may not be recognised for the purposes of the immunisation schedule. If you are unsure about timing, please speak with your doctor or nurse.

What to expect after vaccination

It is common for children to experience some mild reactions after an immunisation. These usually settle within a few days.

Soreness or redness

The injection site may be red, swollen or sore for a short time.

Feeling unsettled

Some children may be sleepy, unsettled or a little unhappy after their vaccination.

Mild fever

A mild fever can occur as the immune system responds to the vaccine.

What if my child is unwell?

If your child is very unwell or has a significant fever, it may be appropriate to postpone their vaccination until they have recovered. If you're unsure whether your child's symptoms should affect their appointment, please speak with our team before delaying their vaccination.

Helping your child feel comfortable

If your child has soreness or a fever after vaccination, you can use appropriate pain relief medicines such as paracetamol as directed. If you have questions about what is suitable for your child, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Keeping your child's vaccinations on track

We know family life can be busy. Our practice uses clinical recalls and reminders to help identify children who may be overdue for routine immunisations.
