Free RSV Vaccines for Older Australians

As of May 2026, the RSV vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for older Australians aged 75 and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 and over.

What is RSV?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly contagious respiratory virus that infects the airways and lungs, acting as a major cause of pneumonia and respiratory infection in older Australians. While often causing mild, cold-like symptoms in younger people, RSV is dangerous for older adults (60+), leading to significant rates of hospitalisation and death.

Who is eligible for a free RSV vaccine?

The government has extended eligibility to Australians aged 75 and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 and over; adding to the already eligible pregnant women, and high-risk infants.

How many doses do I need?

The RSV vaccine is a 1 dose per lifetime vaccine for older Australians.
