Holter Monitoring
We offer bulk billed on-site holter monitoring testing for our patients
What is a Holter Monitor?
A Holter monitor is a small, portable device that monitors and records the electrical rhythms of your heart via an electrocardiogram (ECG) over an extended period of time, usually over 24 or 48 hours.
The Holter Monitor Process
Get a referral
Step 1
If your GP determines that holter monitor testing is appropriate, they will write you a referral for the service. Only patients with a referral are eligible for holter monitoring testing.
Book an appointment
Step 2
Once you have a referral from your GP, our receptionists will assist you in booking an appointment with one of our nurses to have the holter monitor fitted.
Prepare for your holter appointment
Step 3
Your Holter monitor must not get wet, which means you won’t be able to have a shower, bathe or go swimming until it is removed after the monitoring period.
To best prepare for your test, please:
Shower before coming to your appointment to have the monitor fitted.
The chest area needs to be free of hair to ensure a good quality tracing. Our nurse will shave your chest if this is required before fitting the Holter monitor, or you can do this yourself prior to your appointment.
Wear loose, two-piece clothing to make it easier for the monitor to be fitted and removed.
Fitting your monitor
Step 4
You will be fitted with a small, lightweight, portable monitor by one of our trained nurses. You can expect this to take approx. 15 minutes.
Wearing your monitor
Step 5
Your monitor will continuously record the electrical activity of your heart for 24 to 48 hours as requested by your doctor. It must not be removed during this time.
Removing the monitor
Step 6
When you return after the required testing period, our staff will remove the holter. This process takes less than 10 minutes.
Reporting
Step 7
Your results will be reviewed by a subspecialist Cardiac Electrophysiologists. They will generate a report that will be sent to your referring GP.
Booking a follow-up appointment
Step 8
You can expect for your results to be ready after 24 hours. You need to book an appointment with your referring GP to discuss your results.
