Type 2 Diabetes Risk Check

If you’re 40–49 years old, you may be eligible for a bulk-billed check to assess your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This quick health assessment helps identify risk factors and gives you personalised advice to protect your health.

What does the assessment include?

The Type 2 Diabetes Risk Check is a Medicare-funded health assessment for people aged 40–49 who may be at higher risk of diabetes. It includes a review of your health history, lifestyle, and risk factors using the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Tool. Your doctor may also do a brief examination or request simple tests if needed. You’ll receive personalised advice on how to lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

How often can I have it done?

You can have a Medicare diabetes risk assessment once every three years if you are aged 40–49 and considered at high risk. This makes it easy to regularly check your health and stay on top of your risk factors.

Is there a cost?

The Type 2 Diabetes Risk Check is fully covered by Medicare for eligible patients, so there is no out-of-pocket cost. This allows you to access important preventive care without worrying about fees.

What happens after the assessment?

After your check, your GP will explain your results and what they mean for your health. If needed, you may be given lifestyle recommendations, referrals to allied health professionals, or follow-up appointments. The goal is to help you make small changes now to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes in the future.
